Scanclimber serving at Europe’s largest port

The Port of Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe while also being one of the top 10 largest ports in the world. The port of Rotterdam stretches over the distance of 40 kilometers covering the area of 105 square kilometers. Being the largest in Europe, the port of Rotterdam had a net profit of 122.5 million € (2014) making it one of the major driving forces of the Dutch economy. The port is operated by the Port of Rotterdam Authority, a municipality body of the municipality of Rotterdam.


The long history of the Port of Rotterdam dates back to the 14th century as the city of Rotterdam grew from a small village to major harbor city. In earlier times, smaller docks were built by the river as the connections between Rotterdam and the North Sea were unfeasible, with multiple bays between them. In the first half of 20th century, the operations of port were moved from west centers towards the North Sea. A large canal was designed and dug partially to deepen the canal's bed in order to let natural water flows connect the rivers with the North Sea. The main industrial activity initiated once the waterways were connected. With the passage of time, the port went through extensive improvements with the construction of the Europe gate complex (Europoort). The Port of Rotterdam was not just expanded with time but also equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and terminals to handle enormous quantities of cargo. Having built 24 m quay, the port is now able to handle largest ships in the world.

Requirements of Hoist

Being Europe’s largest port, the vast amounts of cargo are handled with harbor cranes. The harbor cranes have tall structures and are mostly controlled from their control panels. It is important that cranes may be accessed conveniently and quickly in order to maximize efficiency. The maintenance of these harbor cranes is also of great importance. Accessing the cranes as well as doing their maintenance work could not be done as efficiently by climbing stairs. An industrial hoist solves these issues and makes the cargo handling run smoother.

Project Information

The decisions for the container vessels' unloading sites are made only a few hours before their arrival. The unloading process has to begin immediately as the vessels arrive to minimize costs caused by wasted time. The cranes must be in position and ready to act once a vessel is fixed to the quay. Therefore the installation of a hoist was essential even though the height which was necessary to reach was only 25 meters. Two Scanclimber SC300K units were chosen for the site. With a run time of only one minute, the cabin in the crane could be accessed safely and quickly. Besides, access to the cranes' control centers, crews also use the hoist for inspections and servicing the upper parts of the cranes where the electrical and mechanical parts are.
