Scanclimber® by Tractel® Mast Climbing Work Platforms are suitable for any kind of facade work, installations, bricklaying and the handling of passengers and materials.

Once a renowned international racing circuit, Keimola is being converted into a residential area. Scanclimber MCWP’s ensure optimal ergonomics and high efficiency in the facade bricklaying work.

History

Keimola is well known for its motor racing stadium located in Vantaa, Southern Finland. The stadium had a rich history, hosting several international racing championships from 1966 to 1978. The race track was also used for music festivals.

Over the years, the complete closure of the track resulted in its deterioration. Some structures were left standing, like the control tower which was seriously damaged in a fire in 2004 but restored as a memorial to the race track.

Development Plan

It was decided to develop a residential area on the site. The whole Keimolanmäki residential area project could take more than a decade. In the first stage, Skanska was given the project for constructing 131 housing units. Brick, laid by Polar Muuraus Oy, was chosen for the facade material.

The development plan for these 131 housing units includes construction of two new apartment buildings comprising 8-10 floors and a single storey outbuilding. Construction work began in December, 2014 and will be completed in October-November, 2016.

Scanclimber MCWP & its key advantages

Once the building foundations for were laid and the structure was built, there was a need for a way to carry out the facade bricklaying work. Scaffolding was an option but a Scanclimber MCWP was deemed the most feasible solution available. Here Scanclimber SC5000 & SC8000 were chosen for the job.

The key advantages that Scanclimber MCWP offered the bricklaying process were:

Scanclimber MCWP focuses on maximum productivity with minimal worker fatigue. Bricks were loaded on to the platform, which moved along the facade. The bricks were within easy reach of the bricklayers. This resulted in reduced material handling and transport time and greatly improved productivity.

Accessibility to the façade surface

With the use of a Scanclimber work platform, a whole side of the building facade was accessed at one time without undue effort as the platform could be extended by adding more platform sections. The platform sections are easy to mount to the existing platform.

High lifting capacity

One of the key features of Scanclimber work platforms is their lifting capacity. The lifting capacity range of the platforms is 1300-8000 kg. In this case, SC8000 & SC5000 were used; both heavy duty mast climbing work platforms with a lifting capacity of nearly 8000 kg and 5000 kg respectively. Such high capacity allowed workers to load the platform evenly with bricks. In one trip the workers had enough bricks available on the platform to work without interruptions.

Movability of bricks

The platforms were integrated with Scanclimber lifting table LT500 at ground level on the Keimola construction site. The workers filled the single wheel trolley with bricks at the ground station and moved the trolley to the lifting table, which raised the level to the working platform. This practice saved extensive physical effort in material transportation. This integration of platforms with the LT500 resulted in the highly-efficient movement of the bricks.

Customer feedback

Although the customer is already familiar with the value and efficiency that Scanclimber machines bring to such projects, the contractor’s team, including the site manager, praised them highly. While discussing the project with our marketing manager, he remarked:

We are glad that we upgraded our fleet with Scanclimber MCWP’s. When I got to know this bricklaying stage and façade work, a Scanclimber MCWP was the first thing that came to my mind.
