Shaping Skylines
The Yvie (also known as Y-Towers), two buildings, respectively a 110 m-high hotel and a 101 m-high residential building, located in Amsterdam, stand as a striking example of modern architectural innovation. Its unique design and complex construction requirements presented a range of challenges, particularly in the installation of its natural stone façade. With heights reaching up to 110 meters and the intricate arrangement of balconies, traditional scaffolding and cranes proved inadequate for the task. Scanclimber’s advanced Mast Climbing Work Platforms (MCWPs) provided the ideal solution for this ambitious project.

The Challenge
The Y-Tower’s façade called for the precise installation of natural stone, with individual pieces weighing up to 120 kilograms. Adding to the complexity, the building featured irregularly spaced balconies with vertical distances ranging from 3 to 28 meters. Traditional methods, such as scaffolding and cranes, were not only time-consuming but also posed significant logistical challenges. Ensuring accessibility to these varying heights and safely transporting heavy materials to elevated positions required a more innovative approach.

The Solution
Scanclimber stepped in with a suite of tailored solutions to meet the project’s demands. The equipment supplied included:
- 2 x SC5000
- 11 x SC8000
- 2 x SC10000
- Sliding Deck Extensions (SDEs) 2m extendable
- Heavy-duty mast and accessories
These mast climbers provided a stable and versatile platform for material transport and installation at heights of up to 110 meters. A key feature was the sliding deck extensions (SDEs), which allowed workers to access the undersides of the irregularly arranged balconies. This functionality significantly streamlined the process of cladding the balconies with natural stone, reducing the need for excessive repositioning and anchor points. The HD mast enabled safe and stable anchoring/tying distances of up to 30 meters, making it easy to work with irregular balcony layouts.

Key Benefits
The use of Scanclimber’s MCWPs delivered several measurable benefits:
-
- Enhanced Efficiency: The platforms facilitated efficient material transport directly to the installation heights, minimizing downtime and eliminating the need for cranes.
- Improved Accessibility: The ability to extend platforms with SDEs beneath the balconies provided unparalleled access to sub-surfaces, ensuring precision in stone placement.
- Optimized Safety: Workers operated in a secure and stable environment, reducing the risk of accidents associated with traditional scaffolding.
- Integrated Power Access: Built-in power sockets on the platform allowed workers to use power tools for stone cutting at height, eliminating the need for additional extension cables and enhancing efficiency.
- Challenging Anchoring Requirements: The extended tying distance of the HD mast facilitated anchoring to irregularly placed balcony structures, reducing the number of required anchors and streamlining the overall setup process.

Overcoming Challenges
The project faced significant challenges with stone installation under balconies and long tying distances, which were successfully addressed using sliding deck extensions and HD masts with heavy-duty ties. Scanclimber’s mast climbing work platforms (MCWPs) proved instrumental in overcoming these hurdles. Their adaptability allowed precise access under overhangs, while the robustness of the HD masts and secure HD ties ensured stability over extended anchoring distances. Thanks to this reliable equipment, the construction team maintained steady progress, meeting the demands of intricate façade work and keeping the project on schedule.

Why Scanclimber?
Scanclimber was chosen for this project due to its proven ability to deliver tailored, high-performance solutions for complex construction challenges. Key reasons for selection included:
- The extendable platform extensions (SDEs), which was critical for accessing hard-to-reach areas.
- High load capacity, enabling the safe transport of heavy natural stones.
- Minimal anchoring requirements, which reduced installation time and complexity.

The Outcome
The Y-Tower now stands completed, with its natural stone façade serving as a testament to the synergy between architectural ambition and engineering innovation. Scanclimber’s MCWPs not only enabled the successful execution of this challenging project but also demonstrated the brand’s commitment to providing solutions that enhance efficiency, safety, and precision.
As urban skylines continue to evolve, Scanclimber remains at the forefront, delivering cutting-edge access solutions that turn architectural visions into reality.
