Scanclimber Mast Climbing Work Platforms Support Stay Cable Installation on the Grenland Bridge Norway

Scanclimber SC5000 Mast Climbers Enable Safe and Efficient Access for the Grenland Bridge Project

As one of Europe’s leading construction and infrastructure companies, Eiffage Genie Civil has extensive experience delivering complex bridge and civil engineering projects where safety, precision, and reliable access are essential.

During the construction of the Grenland Bridge in Norway, the large-scale construction demanded reliable access solutions that could operate safely at extreme heights while providing efficient working conditions for installation crews. Scanclimber’s mast climbing work platforms played a critical role in enabling the safe installation of stay cables on one of the project’s most demanding structures.

Working at heights of up to 166 metres required an access solution that combined flexibility, stability, and exceptional reach. The Scanclimber SC5000 Mast Climbing Work Platform equipped with All Reach Extensions (ARE) delivered exactly that.

Project Overview
The Grenland Bridge project presented unique access challenges due to the exceptional height of the bridge pylons and the complexity of installing stay cables between the bridge deck elements and the pylons.

To complete this critical construction phase safely and efficiently, the project team deployed:

2 x Scanclimber SC5000 Mast Climbing Work Platforms

The bridge pylons rise to a total height of 166 metres. The mast climbing work platform base was installed on a crossbeam positioned 126 metres above ground, allowing the platforms to travel an additional 40 metres to reach the top working elevation.

Each equipped with 2 x All Reach Extension (ARE)

Mast Climbers with All Reach Extensions enabled the project team to safely perform precision stay cable installation in locations that would have been significantly more challenging using conventional access methods like scaffolding or cranes.

The Challenge
Installing stay cables between bridge elements and pylons is a demanding operation that requires:

Safe access at extreme working heights

Stable working platforms for precision installation

Efficient movement of personnel, tools, and materials

Comfortable working conditions that improve productivity

Reliable equipment capable of operating within a complex bridge structure

Traditional access solutions offered limited flexibility for reaching the required installation points while maintaining the highest levels of worker safety and operational efficiency.

The Solution

Scanclimber’s SC5000 Mast Climbing Work Platforms
configured with All Reach Extensions (ARE)

  • The ARE provided the additional horizontal reach needed to safely access stay cable installation points on the bridge pylons without compromising platform stability.
  •

  • Mounted on a crossbeam at 126 metres, the SC5000 platforms travelled upwards to the full working height of 166 metres, creating a secure and productive working environment throughout the stay cable installation process.
  •

  • The combination of the robust SC5000 design and the flexibility of the All-Reach Extensions enabled crews to carry out critical installation work with improved access, reduced repositioning, and greater operational efficiency.

Key Benefits of the Scanclimber Solution

Better Working Ergonomics

A spacious and stable working platform improved worker comfort while allowing tools and materials to remain close to the work area, reducing unnecessary manual handling and worker fatigue.

Easy Access to Challenging Areas

The All-Reach Extension (ARE) enabled safe access to difficult-to-reach installation points on the bridge pylons, overcoming the limitations of conventional access methods.

Improved Worker Safety

The SC5000 mast climbers provided a stable and secure working platform at extreme heights, enabling crews to install stay cables with enhanced safety throughout the project.

Faster Project Execution

The efficient vertical movement of personnel and equipment, combined with the extended reach of the ARE, reduced repositioning time and supported continuous workflow during stay cable installation.

Overcoming the Access Challenge
Bridge construction projects often involve complex geometries where conventional scaffolding or suspended platforms can restrict productivity and increase installation complexity
For the Grenland Bridge project, the combination of the Scanclimber SC5000 and All Reach Extensions successfully addressed these challenges by providing:

Safe access up to 166 metres

Extended reach for hard-to-reach bridge structure

Stable working conditions for precision stay cable installation

Reliable performance throughout the project duration

This enabled the construction team to complete the stay cable installation safely while maintaining efficient project progress.
